چکیده

The dynamics of many natural and artificial systems are well described as random walks on a network: the stochastic behaviour of molecules, traffic patterns on the internet, fluctuations in stock prices and so on. The vast literature on random walks provides many tools for computing properties such as steady-state probabilities or expected hitting times. Previously, however, there has been no general theory describing the distribution of possible paths followed by a random walk. Here, we show that for any random walk on a finite network, there are precisely three mutually exclusive possibilities for the form of the path distribution: finite, stretched exponential and power law. The form of the distribution depends only on the structure of the network, while the stepping probabilities control the parameters of the distribution. We use our theory to explain path distributions in domains such as sports, music, nonlinear dynamics and stochastic chemical kinetics.

Distinct scalings for mean first-passage time of random walks on scale-free networks with the same degree sequence.

In general, the power-law degree distribution has profound influence on various dynamical processes defined on scale-free networks. In this paper, we will show that power-law degree distribution alone does not suffice to characterize the behavior of trapping problems on scale-free networks, which is an integral major theme of interest for random walks in the presence of an immobile perfect abso...

A PRELUDE TO THE THEORY OF RANDOM WALKS IN RANDOM ENVIRONMENTS

A random walk on a lattice is one of the most fundamental models in probability theory. When the random walk is inhomogenous and its inhomogeniety comes from an ergodic stationary process, the walk is called a random walk in a random environment (RWRE). The basic questions such as the law of large numbers (LLN), the central limit theorem (CLT), and the large deviation principle (LDP) are ...

Small worlds, mazes and random walks

– A parametrized family of random walks whose trajectories are easily identified as graphs is presented. This construction shows small-world–like behavior but, interestingly, a power law emerges between the minimal distance L and the number of nodes N of the graph instead of the typical logarithmic scaling. We explain this peculiar finding in the light of the well-known scaling relationships in...

Effects of reciprocity on random walks in weighted networks

It has been recently reported that the reciprocity of real-life weighted networks is very pronounced, however its impact on dynamical processes is poorly understood. In this paper, we study random walks in a scale-free directed weighted network with a trap at the central hub node, where the weight of each directed edge is dominated by a parameter controlling the extent of network reciprocity. W...

Impact of degree heterogeneity on the behavior of trapping in Koch networks

Previous work shows that the mean first-passage time (MFPT) for random walks to a given hub node (node with maximum degree) in uncorrelated random scale-free networks is closely related to the exponent γ of power-law degree distribution P(k) ∼ k(-γ), which describes the extent of heterogeneity of scale-free network structure. However, extensive empirical research indicates that real networked s...
